Each Student Gets a Chinese Name: A Spring 2017 Souvenir

Like before, each student in my Spring 2017 classes gets a Chinese name as a souvenir. Students must be able to write and read their Chinese names to earn some extra credit. I encourage students to use their Chinese names whenever they can. Students enjoy this activity. Some posted their Chinese names on Facebook. Some even turned their lovely Chinese names into beautiful tattoos.

Western Illinois University aims to attain “a credible international education environment that fosters the understanding, knowledge, and skills necessary for life within a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.” I believe the Chinese name initiative could help the university advance that goal. A Chinese name opens up a great window into Chinese culture.

When creating the name, I try to make sure 1) the Chinese name sounds similar to the original English name; 2) The Chinese name is culturally meaningful and sounds elegant. It is a brain-racking and time-consuming process.

The Chinese names I have created for my students are absolutely free. Students do not pay a penny for my hard work. You may realize how unselfish I am when you know that creating names for people and companies is becoming a booming industry in China. In this country, people pay a lot of attention to names. Parents are willing to hire an expert to produce a beautiful name for their newborn baby and the expert gets paid handsomely. That is for Chinese name only. If you want to get a good English name for your baby, you have to pay even more. Here is how a British schoolgirl is becoming rich by simply helping Chinese parents choose English names for their babies.

Below are the Chinese names, their pronunciations and meanings. Enjoy!
